In a statement on Thursday, the BJP said that Harsh Vardhan had played a ‘pioneering’ role in making India polio-free.

Vardhan said it is like a dream come true moment for him.

"I am very happy that my dream of a polio-free India has become a reality. Though several experts had discounted the possibility of achieving this when I had first started an effort to run the 'pulse polio' campaign in Delhi, I had convinced Health Ministers of other states to scale it up to the national level,” he said.

"The dedication and commitment of thousands of professionals and volunteers have made it a reality," he added.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday declared India free of the crippling polio virus.

India's last case of the wild polio virus was detected in a two-year-old girl in West Bengal in January 2011.
