"An SIT led by DSP Headquarters has been formed for investigation into the tragic incident," Superintendent of Police, Rohtak, Shashank Anand said yesterday.

The ASI, identified as Rohtash, had allegedly fired at Head Constable Sanjay last night before shooting himself, the SP said.

"Our preliminary probe revealed that the ASI shot the HC from a close range. But we are also waiting for post-mortem and forensic reports," he said.

"We were told that some altercation took place on January 17 between the two over some issue which appeared to have led to this incident," he added.

According to the SP, Rohtash was entrusted with a desk job at the CIA (Crime Investigation Agency) here and was not supposed to carry a weapon. The gun found from the spot was allegedly taken out from the armoury by the ASI, he added.

On the demand by the deceased's family for a CBI probe into the matter, SP Anand said that he had assured them of a fair and impartial inquiry.
