Chandigarh: With a view to prevent incidents of crackers catching fire in godowns or retail selling points in the run up to Diwali, the Haryana Police has decided to launch a drive to check licences of manufacturers and ensure that adequate safety measures have been taken by them.

Cracker shops and godowns would be inspected by the station house officers and gazetted officers for licences, a spokesman of the state Police Department said here on Saturday.

With Diwali approaching, the possibility of unscrupulous elements manufacturing fire crackers without obtaining licence from the competent authority could not be ruled out, he said.

Legal action would be initiated against unlicenced or unauthorised manufacturers and sellers, he said.

All Commissionerates of police in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Ambala-Panckhula, all district superintendents of police and superintendents of police, Railways, Haryana, Ambala Cantt have been asked to launch the drive with immediate effect, he added.
