Sirsa (Har): Protest by villagers, demanding upgradation of a government school, took a violent turn on Monday in Kagdana village of the district with the agitators torching four vehicles prompting police to resort to cane charging.

The vehicles set on fire included a police bus, official car of the Naib Tehsildar, personal vehicle of a police officer and a jeep.

Police resorted to mild lathi-charge in an attempt to disperse the mob and open the road-blockade.

The mob responded with more force compelling the police men including officers on the spot to flee from the scene, an eyewitness said.

The agitators were anguished over the alleged delay in upgradation of a local government school by the education department, police said.

Superintendent of Police Devender Yadav and SDM Munish Nagpal later reached Chopta, the block head quarter, in order to chalk out a strategy to handle the situation that remained tense till late in the evening.

District Education Officer Kumkum Grover, meanwhile told reporters that the case for upgradation of the school has already been sent to the higher authorities.
