Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday directed the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to complete all works related to installation of video conferencing facility in the Burail jail before the next hearing.

Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana authorities informed the court that the work on installing video conferencing system has been completed in all the jails in the region.

Notably, the decision to this effect was taken while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Viresh Shandilya, a resident of Haryana. The petitioner had urged the court to give direction for connecting all the jails to lower courts through video conferencing.

It is worth mentioning that the need for setting up video conferencing system was felt during the hearing of the infamous jail break case. Huge resources and manpower were used in beefing up the security during the hearing of the case that involved hardened criminals Jagtar Singh Hawara and Paramjit Singh Bheora who were the assassins of late Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
