Allahabad:The Allahabad High Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government for the details of custodial tortures and deaths reported in the state during the past one year. In addition, the HC has also sought the report on action taken against policemen who have been alleged in these cases.


The state government has been directed to file an affidavit in this context within three weeks.

A bench of Justices Imtiyaz Murtaza and Jayshree Tiwari gave this ruling on a PIL filed by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).


According to the details mentioned in the PIL, Dildar Nagar police of Ghazipur district had arrested Shambhu Kushwaha (60) along with his two sons. They had been arrested on an FIR lodged by one Sikander Kushwaha.


However, things took an ugly turn when Shambhu allegedly died due to the police thrashing. Following which, an FIR in this context was lodged against six policemen.

The PIL also carried the reports of Human Rights Commission according to which UP tops the list of states where most of custodial deaths have been reported.

The examples of custodial deaths of Rampal in the Karor police lock up under Barkhera police station, Kamlesh Singh in Gambhirpur police station,Salim under the Gal Shahid police station and few deaths in Barabanki district are mentioned in the PIL.
