Kochi, Jan 12 (Agencies): A group of lawyers of Kerala High Court on Wednesday began a signature campaign seeking former CJI Justice K G Balakrishnan's resignation as NHRC Chairperson in the wake of allegations of amassing of wealth by his close family members.

The campaign was to mount pressure on the high court advocates Association to move a resolution with the same plea and also seek a probe into the allegations. Until the probe is over, Justice Balakrishnan should step down from the National Human Rights Commission post, the lawyers said.

The lawyers are likely to submit the notice to the Association on Thursday.

A meeting of association on Tuesday to discuss a resolution on corruption in higher judiciary failed to take any decision as two sections of advocates demanded and opposed specific ammendments seeking a probe into the allegations.

The general body was called by the Association to discuss the resolution to request a fact-finding inquiry about the contents of a letter submitted by former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan alleging corruption in higher judiciary.

The meeting could not arrive at a consensus and suggested ammendments to the resolution specifically demanding a probe into allegations against justice Balakrishnan's two sons-in-law -- P V Sreenijan and Benny -- and younger brother K G Bhaskaran who allegedly amassed properties worth crores in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts in the last 4-5 years.
