Nainital:  In a new development, Centre and Uttarakhand governments have been asked to file reply to Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding illegal allocation of the acquired farming land in Haridwar district.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice UC Dhyani conducted the hearing.

In the PIL filed on behalf of Kisan Sangharsa Samiti, it has been stated that BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd) had acquired nearly 7000 acre farm land for setting up industrial units.

What is most surprising is that BHEL has so far used only 1900 acres of land whereas 1500 acres of land still remains useless with the company.

Petitioner told the court that a major chunk of land has already been given to Haridwar Development Authority, Housing Development Council, and UP Housing Development Board on lease.

Besides this, about 3200 acres of land were given to different organizations which are reaping rich profit from them.

The petitioner has said that according to present norms, the acquired land should be returned to farmers if they are not put to use.
