Nairobi: Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, brainchild behind 1998 bombings at the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, has been killed in Somalia.

According to officials, Comoros-born Fazul Abdullah Mohammed and one of his accomplices were gunned down at a checkpost in Mogadishu on Wednesday.

Mohammed was the head of the al-Qaeda network in East Africa. Kenyan police chief Mathew Iteere told a local TV channel that the Somali transitional government has confirmed Mohammed's death.

He operated from Somalia and planned the terror attacks against the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1998.

Hundreds of people had died in the bombings. The US had offered a reward of USD 5 million for information leading to his capture.
