Kolkata: Baffled with increasing fake insurance claims and exorbitant medical treatment expenses, the insurance companies are planning to pass on the burden to the policy holders. Health insurance companies are accounting losses on the regular basis. The customers will now have to pay larger premium amount from the FY 2013-14.

The health insurance companies have requested Insurance Regulatory Development Authority to allow 10-40 percent increase in the premium. The Chairman of National Insurance Company N S R Chandraprasad said, The IRDA is likely to give its approval on increasing the premium.

According to the sources, the health insurance companies may increase the premium by 20-40 percent. If IRDA gives nod to the proposal, the increased premium will be applicable from April 2013.

The Chairman of GIC Ashok A Roy said that health insurance premium needs to be reviewed. Apart from that, the hospitals should also charge reasonable amount for the treatment.
