Jaipur: Blackbucks in Kota division continue to bear the fury of this season’s heavy monsoon rains. The heavy downpour in the past five days has claimed the lives of 200 blackbucks.

Though official sources put the toll at 200 but villagers claim that the toll may be much higher with dozens of carcasses still scattered in swamps.

The alarming number of blackbuck deaths has raised serious questions about the lack of preparations by the forest department to meet such situation. The department has confirmed the report of death of 100 blackbucks in Chhabra, Chhipabarod, Mangrol, Atru and Anta areas of Baran district.

The Congress president in Baran district, Nizamuddin, claims that 100 more blackbucks have died in Kotri district. To confirm this claim, DFO (Baran) P D Gupta embarked on a tour and finally put the toll at 12.
