Hyderabad: Normal life was thrown out of gear in Hyderabad due to 15.2 cms of rain since last evening even as nine persons were killed in two separate incidents of wall collapse in the wee hours on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of state Disaster Management Department Ratnakumar said that apart from these nine, no other deaths were reported due to rain from anywhere in the state.

A mother and three children, who were fast asleep in their hut, were killed when a wall collapsed on them at Adityanagar, Miyapur.

In a similar incident at Balanagar industrial area, five more persons were killed. Of the five, three were said to be from Madhya Pradesh, according to local police.

They were staying in huts on the roadside abutting an industrial unit. The compound wall of the unit collapsed because of heavy rain.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner M T Krishna Babu, who visited the spot, said a case of criminal negligence was being booked against the management of the industrial unit.

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the death of the victims and demanded that the state government come to the aid of the bereaved families by paying adequate compensation.

He lashed out at the government for totally neglecting the development of infrastructure like roads and drains inHyderabad and said the current problems were a result of that negligence.

GHMC Commissioner Krishna Babu toured several parts of the city that were under a sheet of water because of the incessant rain.

"We have identified 53 low-lying areas in the city. We have formed special teams to take up relief measures and also set up six control rooms to attend to emergencies," Krishna Babu said.
