Centre told to review upper caste panel

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre to consider a representation for constitution of an Upper Caste Commission.

The order was passed by the Lucknow bench of Acting Chief Justice Amitava Lala and Justice Anil Kumar while disposing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Swaraj Party of India seeking seeting up of such a commission (Sawarn Ayog).

The petitioner sought direction from the court for constitution of an upper caste commission on the lines of other existing commissions.

The petitioner's counsel Ashok Pandey submitted before the court that earlier in two other matters the court also directed the government to consider constitution of the commission, but those orders were not complied with.

On behalf of the state government, Additional Advocate General Bulbul Godiyal contended that if earlier orders were not complied in this matter, the petitioner may file a contempt petition.

The bench after hearing the matter directed the state and the Centre to consider and decide the representation in the light of earlier orders in this regard within two months.
