Chandigarh: Taking tough stand against tainted Punjab police personnel, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the state government to remove all convicted cops and submit a report in this regard.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice RN Raina took a serious note of reinstating tainted officials who were convicted in criminal cases.

The bench has also issued a circular by Director General of Police stating that no officer should be removed who were sentenced for less than three years.

A PIL application filed by HC Arora states that as per rules any police officer who is criminally charged cannot be reinstated unless the appeal court stays order of the lower court. But the DGP , in his circular, has stated not to remove officers receiving punishment for less than three years.

Arora has also mentioned that convicted officers who have been released on bail by the appeal court are also serving in police.

The petitioner argued that any police officer cannot remain at the post just because he/she has been granted bail.
