The High Court was hearing a PIL filed by Swati Agrawal seeking directions to allow banking customers to make unlimited number of transactions free of any charge on own bank ATMs.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Rohini said that banks are unnecessarily charging extra ATM usage fees from its holders.

“It is same as taking extra tax from them,” the bench observed.

The Court has fixed the matter for next hearing on February 18.

According to a RBI guideline issued on August 14, bank customers in six metros-- Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore-- are allowed to withdraw money free of charge only five times a month and every transaction beyond this limit will be charges Rs 20 per use.

According to the plea, the guidelines came into force from November 1 were against the international practices in relation to use of own bank ATMs followed across the world.
