Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court, on Thursday, served notices to Chandigarh administration along with Punjab and Haryana government for selling vehicle registration number illegally.

Social activist, Hemant Goswami filed Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh administration for auctioning vehicle registration number for more than Rs 5 lakh.

Citing the verdict passed by Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2008, the petitioner mentioned that state government has no rights to sell the vehicle registration number. Only the Central government can sell these numbers.

He also alleged that the administration charged heavy fees for issuing registration number.

The activity is violation of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. Going against the provisions of Act, the Haryana government charged additional fee on every registration number.
