Bhopal: The heap of praises being showered on the Madhya Pradesh government for initiating ‘Beti Bachao Anbhiyaan’ proves an act of flattery when one takes a look into the data of abortions conducted in state.

Bhopal tops the state chart of abortion of 12-week-old foetus. It is a well-versed fact that the sex of an unborn can be ascertained in a period of three months. Therefore, one cannot rule out the possibility that these abortions were carried out after confirming the sex of the child.

According to the data available with the state health department, a total of 42,112 abortion cases have been reported in the state. Out of which maximum abortion (6048) were carried out in the state capital. The data of the last fiscal for Bhopal has been outnumbered by the abortions carried out in the first six months of the ongoing financial year.

In the first six months of financial year 2011-12, as many as 6,792 abortion cases have been reported in Bhopal. From April to September 2011, a total number of 25, 508 abortion cases have been registered.

However, the actual and unofficial record of abortion can be much different from the data available with the health department.

Other than Bhopal, the cases of abortion have also been registered from places like Khabua, Chattarpur, Chindwara, Damih, Dhar, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Indore, Sagar, Satna.
