Dharamsala: The Himachal Pradesh Assembly on passed a resolution unanimously asking the Centre to amend the Ancient Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act to provide relief to people living in the vicinity of monuments.

Moving the resolution, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said that the Act should be amended, keeping in view the difficult topography of the state and scarcity of land.

He said the state has scores of ancient monuments, mainly religious places and the people residing in the vicinity of these protected monuments were finding it difficult even to repair or renovate their houses and urged that the residents should be allowed some freedom by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

"The ASI is issuing notices to all close at hand government institutions and private houses for maintaining the status quo and not add even a brick anywhere," he said.
