Shimla:  Panchayati Raj Department of Himachal Pradesh has decided to appoint ‘Bharat Nirman Sewak’ in each block of the state for social audit of the development projects. These unpaid volunteers would work in coordination with the Block Development Officers.

Earlier, the Himachal Pradesh government had appointed the Bharat Nirman Sewak in Kandaghat, Shimla on a trial basis on the directions of Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Now the government has decided to appoint these volunteers in all blocks.

Though the Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had tried to encourage the state governments to appoint Bharat Nirman Sewaks by making an informal announcement of an honorarium for them, the states have been reluctant in appointing them till the honorarium is granted.

The Bharat Nirman Sewak volunteers would have the right to conduct social audit of any government programme and would spread awareness about the government projects.

Any willing person to be a Bharat Nirman Sewak can write in person to the related block or Panchayat.
