Islamabad: A Hindu trader has been shot dead by alleged extortionists in Pakistan's restive Balochistan prompting fellow community members to block the main Karachi-Quetta highway.

Seth Ado Mal, who was also an ex-councillor, was opening his shop in main Hub town when armed assailants, after an argument, opened fire on him, police officials were quoted as saying by 'The Express Tribune' daily.

The business community closed their shops and businesses in protest, while members of the Hindu community blocked the main Karachi-Quetta highway.

Mal was shot 700 kilometres south-west of Quetta.
