New Delhi:  Even as the consequences of Anna Hazare’s movement in national politics will be analysed later, the inferences of the Hisar result tells different tale. Team Anna can pat their back on defeat of the Congress candidate, but after assessment of the Hisar result, the claims of Anna effect seems to be hollow. Blatant caste polarization and political equations are potent reason behind the results.

If voters had to select the candidates on the basis of clear image, then chief competitors should not have bagged enough votes. The ruling government hardly gets success in by-polls. The Congress had to suffer loss in Hisar for being in power at the Centre and in the state. Despite historical win in the previous Lok Sabha election, the Congress got defeated in Hisar.

It is no less important fact that after the death of Bhajan Lal, his son Kuldeep Bishnoi was contesting in Hisar. The emotional plank of the traditional voters and alliance with BJP worked for Bishnoi in winning Hisar by-poll.

Taking caste equation into consideration, about one third are Jat voters who had two figures of their community, Ajay Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Jai Prakash of the Congress in the Hisar by-polls.

Bhajan Lal was considered to be a prominent face against Jat dominance. After his death, son Kuldeep Bishnoi also carried forward the non-Jat image, which resulted in the polarization of Jat votes in favour of Ajay Chautala.

In Jat vs non- Jat elections, several Congress stalwarts urged people to vote for INLD. Consequently, Bishnoi faced tough time to win the elections and despite state government’s back up, the Congress candidate could not save his security deposit.

Not only in Haryana, the Congress experienced drubbing in Bihar, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh by-polls as well.

Anna’s ingenuity and humbleness should be factored in while analyzing the results. Even if it is believed that the Anna factor worked in the urban areas, it was not that massive in impact that Team Anna starts thinking that their anti-corruption movement has become the single most reason for vote swing and therefore they hold the key.

With the direct and negative interference in the Hisar elections, Arvind Kejriwal has brought into light the dissent within Team Anna. As the internal conflict in Team Anna started surfacing, it raised a question as to what forced Anna to go for ‘Maun Vrat’. Anna Hazare was always hesitant to intervene directly and that too in a negative way in electoral politics.

On the other hand, due to many reasons, Anna’s colleagues have stirred up the sanctity of his movement.

Meanwhile, before the Hisar by-polls, the HJK-BJP alliance claimed of Team Anna being in their favour, but after winning Kuldeep Bishnoi has been constantly rejecting Anna’s effect in electoral success.

The results of Hisar by-poll and changing attitude of political parties should be an eye opener for Team Anna. They might have to bear the brunt if they try for backdoor entry in the politics on the support they have received on corruption issue.
