New Delhi: Ukraine women's hockey team on Tuesday stunned a higher-ranked Canada 5-2, while Italy held top-ranked South Africa to a 1-1 draw in the London Olympic qualifiers at Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Tuesday.
In the first match of the day in women's qualfiers, Ukraine's Maryna Khilko (12th minute, 28th) struck twice in the first half to go into the breather with a 2-1 lead after Canada's Kat Gillis (2nd) notched up an early goal.
In the second half, Maryna (43rd) pumped in another goal, while skipper Katie Baker (38th) and Stephanie Jameson (40th) extended the lead before Canada's Maddie Secco (48th) brought one back to narrow the gap.
The 26th ranked Ukraine, who held India 1-1 but lost their second match 2-0 to South Africa, now lie in the fourth position in the Pool.
In the second match, world number 19 Italy had their nose ahead as early as in the fourth minute through a penalty conversion by Alessia Dorian Padalino to lead 1-0 at the break.
The 12th ranked South Africa's search for an equalizer ended when Laure Penny finally managed a goal at the 40th minute as the match ended in a draw with both teams gathering one point each.
South Africa and Italy now hold the first and second position in the pool with seven and five points respectively.
