New Delhi: In an effort to supplement the capabilities of internal security forces, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to raise its own fleet of helicopters and aircraft to provide air support to various central armed forces.

So far, only the Border Security Force (BSF) under the ministry has Air Wing, however its strength is not sufficient enough to cater to other agencies of the ministry.

The ministry has already initiated consultations for the purchase of air planes and helicopters, operation and maintenance and for the construction of air strip all over the country.

It has issued special advertisements to invite tenders from national and international companies.

“A specialist company will be shortlisted after due consideration of their expertise, experience and the amount expected in the bid,” a senior official from the Ministry said.

He also added, “The need for a special Air Wing was most felt during anti-naxal operation launched by the ministry.”
