As the shock of Saturday’s clash in Pratapgarh settles into anger and political war, the death of DSP Zia-ul-Haq by a mob during the clash has brought back the memories of honest officers, who fell victim to the corrupt people and mafias.

With Haq being the latest victim, here is a list of a few officers who were murdered for exposing corruption.

March 02, 2013: Deputy Supritendent of Police, Zia-ul-Haq was killed by a mob in Pratapgarh where he had rushed after a village head was shot dead over a land dispute. The slain officer's wife alleged the hand of controversial UP minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh 'Raja Bhaiya', who resigned as Food and Supply minister on Monday.


March 09, 2012: A young IPS officer of the 2009 batch, Narendra Kumar, posted in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, was brutally crushed to death under a stone-laden tractor trolley belonging to the illegal mining mafia.

The ghastly killing happened in Banmur industrial town, when the officer, who was on patrol in his official jeep, noticed a tractor-trolley loaded with stones following which he overtook it and signalled the driver to stop it.


December 5, 2012: An Assisant Sub Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police was allegedly killed in broad day light by three men including an activist of Akali Dal, when he stopped hem from teasing his daughter.

The incident that took place on the main GT road, meters away from Chehhertta Police station sent shock.


June 11, 2012: A policeman was killed in Faridabad when truck loaded with sand allegedly ran over him. The incident was suspected to be the work of sand mafia in the area. The constable Mahaveer Singh was run over by the dumper truck after he tried to stop it near Palla chowk. The cop was on nakabandi duty following a tip-off about the sand mafia.

August 31, 2012: An honest police officer was killed while performing his duty by the liquor mafia in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
Assistant Sub Inspector Dharam Pal was doing his duty at a police check post at night when a car belonging to the liquor mafia in Haryana crushed him to death.


December 11, 2012: Paulose Thomas, an expert consultant for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), was found dead in his apartment in Coimbatore. His family was first told that he had suffered a cardiac arrest. Then they were informed that he had hanged himself. But the autopsy report ruled out suicide or cardiac arrest, confirming a case of murder instead. Police are yet to identify any irregularities in the NHAI road widening project which the victim was engaged in.


January 25, 2011: An Additional District Collector (ADM) was burnt alive by the petrol and diesel mafia at Manmad in Nashik district, when he tried to call other government officials to the scene to stop fuel theft.

Yashwant Sonawane (44) was accompanied by his personal assistant and driver when the perpretrators doused him with kerosene and set him afire  at a roadside Dhaba near Manmad town.


September 10, 2011: Angry residents of a village in Maharashtra’s Nashik district attempted to burn alive an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in protest against the quality of water supplied to them. The attempt was foiled and 16 people have been arrested.

The people barged into the office of Ranjit Kumar, the CEO of Nashik Zilla Parishad and poured oil on him with an intention to burn him alive. Kumar, an IAS officer of 2008 batch, said he was totally taken aback by the attack.


April 02, 2011: Cheif Medical Officer of the Uttar Pradesh family welfare department, Lucknow, BP Singh, was killed in April, 2011. Singh, who had replaced Vinod Arya as CMO in Lucknow had a fallout with his deputy Yogendra Singh Sachan over NRHM booty. Sachan allegedly had hired assassins who gunned down Singh.


Besides, Majunath Shanmugam, an executive with the Inian Oil was murdered in November 2005 for exposing an adulteration racket in Lakhimpur Uttar Pradesh. Satyendra Dubey, a project director at the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), was murdered in Gaya, Bihar in 2003 after fighting corruption in the Golden Quadrilateral highway construction project.
