Kolkata: Expediting the probe into hooch tragedy, the state government on Friday suspended Diamond Harbour in-charge Excise Officer Radheswar Pandey. The departmental inquiry has found him guilty of negligence during his duty hours.

Kakdwip in-charge Excise Officer has been handed over the charge of Diamond Harbour.

The state government in 2009 had also suspended Excise Officer for the Metiabruz hooch tragedy, which claimed 31 lives.

According to sources, several other heads may roll in following the completion of the ongoing probe.

Local people allege that a segment of police officials is involved with mafias in running the illegal liquor shops, adding that police avoided any action against culprits despite several complaints.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed serious concern over the incident. She has ordered a CID probe and assured that culprits will be brought to book.

“The death toll in the hooch tragedy jumped to 170. Many people are still fighting for their lives in several hospitals,” the Chief Minister informed.
