New Delhi: Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, a career official at the United Nations, and his wife Sunanda Pushakr are once again in limelight, courtesy to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s recent sexiest remarks on Pushkar. Narendra Modi’s ‘50 crore’s girlfriend’ comment on Sunanda Pushkar, has generated a lot of public interest on how Tharoor and Sunanda came close and their affairs turned into a matrimonial relationship.

It is well known fact that 56-year-old Tharoor is Sunanda’s third husband and 50-year old Sunanda too is Tharoor’s third wife.

Tharoor and Sunanda met for the first time in 2008 in Delhi at an award function. Then, both hardly had any sort of acquaintance. The first meeting turned into a casual friendship between the two. During next one year, they met only three times. Their second meeting took place in Dubai. Sunanda lived in Dubai those days. They shared their views on numerous issues and deeply impressed each-other. Their friendship turned into an affair since then.

Tharoor had first proposed Sunanda at his official bungalow and got engaged with her in 2010 at Kasauli, located in Himachal Pradesh. Later on August 22, the same year, the two tied the nuptial knots.

Tharoor’s first wife was Tilottama Mukherjee, an academician whom he knew since his school days in Calcutta. His second wife was Christa Giles, a native of Canada.

Sunanda’s first husband was Sanjay Raina, a Kashmiri. After splitting with him, she married a Kerala businessman Sujith Menon who died in 1997 in a road accident. Sunanda has a 17-year-old son from her second marriage.

Tharoor, an MP from Thiruvananthapuram and then MoS External Affairs, had on April 18, 2010 resigned from the Union Council of Ministers after allegations that he misused his office to get shares in the IPL cricket franchise of Cochin came to light. This controversy had erupted after former IPL chief Lalit Modi’s revelations that Sunanda Pushkar had equity stakes in Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), heading the consortium that owned the Kochi team.
