Shimla: In order to reduce the government expenditure, the Himachal Pradesh government has appealed its officials and employees of all departments working here to visit their offices on foot.

However, in his letter to all administrative secretaries, heads of the departments and the chiefs of all state enterprises, Chief Secretary Rajwant Sandhu cites environment conservation and easing traffic congestions in the state capital as the reasons behind the unusual appeal.

He has appealed to the officials and employees that their abeyance to the directive would help meeting the designed goals.

He opined that officials could at least share their vehicles instead of using separate vehicles to office. Sources said if this appeal gets a positive response, the state government will issue similar directives in other cities as well.

It is worth mentioning that Shimla, apart from being the state capital also houses several departmental headquarters which increases the entourage of government vehicles.

The fact that it is a preferred tourist destination during the summers only adds up to the traffic volume.
