The challenge is just an effort to raise awareness of ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) as a part of the challenge the participant have to dump a bucket of ice cold water and then dare someone else to do the same, If they can't, then the alternative is to donate USD 100 to the ALS association

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis referred as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. People who are detected with ALS live for up to 5 years while those detected at initial state cane live for 20 years.

The beginning of the ‘Ice bucket challenge’:

It all started on social media after a US baseball player and ALS patient, Pete Frates, posted a video on a social networking site suggested the idea of the challenge, which he got from his friend.

The challenge is encouraging people for charity:

Amazingly till now more than 1.2 million videos had been shared on social media and as per the ALS website, it has so far received nearly USD 23 million.

The list of celebrities who came up for the ante:

From football star Cristiano Ronaldo to Pop diva Lady Gaga, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg all took up the challenge and dumped a bucket of ice on their head followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Others big names include: Brian Vickers, Satya Nadella, Oprah Winfrey, Britney Spears.
