Amrtisar: First of its kind, the Integrated Checkpost at Indo-Pakistan border at Attari set up on an investment of Rs 150 crore will be inaugurated today by Home Minister P Chidabaram. The initiative that has been taken to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries is already hit by controversies. Recently, Pakistan officials stated that they would not allow passengers to travel through the Attari checkpost instead they will have to use the old gate situated at the border.

Pakistan’s Commerce Secretary Jafar Mahmood said, “Pakistan will not allow people to cross border through the checkpost rather they will be allowed to cross border from old gate at the border.”

Pakistan is miffed over the fact that India did not inform about the setting up of Immigration and border fees department at the ICP. On the other hand Pakistan has no such department at the ICP instead the entire Pakistani departments and offices are situated at the old gate on the border.

While talking to reporters on Thursday Jafar Mahmood said, “Along with introducing new services at the ICP, the list of items that could be imported and exported will be increased.”

Secretary of the Border Management department E Ahmed accepted that there are some issues relating to cross border movement and trade through the newly created ICP at the Attari border.
