New Delhi: Concerned over the wastage of foodgrains and other food items in the country, especially during social gatherings, the Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas has written to the Union Human Resource Ministry and other state HRD Ministries to include the food wastage issue as a subject in the curriculum of secondary and higher secondary students.

Thomas has requested HRD minister Kapil Sibal to instruct the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to revise the curriculum in order to include food wastage as the subject. He also urged the state boards for similar actions.

Food Ministry is also doing a research work to study the pattern of food wastage in the country.

Thomas said, “Inclusion of food wastage as a subject of study in schools will create awareness amongst children. It will also help in exploring solutions to this problem in the country.”
