Rachi: The income tax department on Monday conducted raids in 14 offices of Rungta Mines across the country in connection with illegal mining and tax evasion by the iron ore mining giant.

Rungta Mines is the flagship company of Chaibasa-based RS Rungta Group. The company is one of the biggest mining groups in the country, operating for over six decades mainly in Jharkhand and Odisha.

The raids were done in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa, and Delhi offices of the company and will continue till Tuesday.

"During the search, we have seized a number of incriminating documents from all the company offices regarding their involvement in illegal mining and tax evasion. We cannot comment on anything before the scrutiny of documents is completed." tax officer said.

Director of SR Rungta Group, Nand Lal  Rungta was present at Rungta House in Chaibasa while the raids were conducted. Rungta House was turned in to a fortress by CRPF personnel and employees were restricted to go outside the office premises.

I-T officials are getting full support from the company and are going through all the files and documents minutely.

“Raids have been done at 14 offices of Rungta group in four states and some important documents have been recovered. The investigation is under process and details of seizures will come forward once the raids are over,” Jharkhand Income Tax department’s Additional Director Ajit Kumar Shrivastava said.

Among the iron ore mines in Odisha, Rungta group is biggest in the state with eight iron ore mines.
