New Delhi: Cases of dowry deaths are increasing in the country day by day. It is also a fact that maximum numbers of deaths due to dowry have been reported from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

In 2010, every fourth and seventh girl became a victim of dowry demands in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar respectively.

According to statistics of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), in 2010, around 8391 dowry deaths were reported.

In Uttar Pradesh alone, 2217 girls committed suicide due to dowry demand.

Astonishingly, despite 7-8 percent growth rate and 75 percent literacy, number of people demanding dowry in the state is not coming down .

As per the data, in 2006, 7618 girls were killed due to dowry demands, while the figures went up to 8391in 2008.
