In a post on micro-blogging website Twitter, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said: “India's Consular Officer meets Capt Sunil James & 2 other sailors detained in Lome. Pursues request 4 release with senior officials of Togo.”

Captain James is under detention since July on charges of assisting pirates who had attacked and looted his Marshall Islands-flagged MT Ocean Centurion.

According to reports, the wife of Captain James wants him to conduct the last rites of their 11-month son, whose body is in a hospital morgue. The toddler, who was suffering from septicemia, passed away on Monday.
