New Delhi: India on Monday congratulated the newly-elected President of Egypt Mohamed Morsi, saying it "respects and welcomes" the verdict of the people of that country and was ready to enhance bilateral co–operation.

"Egypt has successfully conducted its presidential elections. We respect and welcome the verdict of the people of Egypt and extend our congratulations to them and President–elect Mohamed Morsi," official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin said.

He said "we wish the new President all success and reiterate our readiness for enhancing bilateral co–operation."

First non-military President, Morsi, 60, was named the fifth president of Egypt after narrowly defeating former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq in the presidential polls held on June 16-17.
