Indore: Annoyed with the jail administration’s decision not to release them on the Independence Day, some of the inmates in Indore Central Jail held hunger strike inside the jail premises.

Later, the jail officials prevailed upon them after hectic parleys and were able to persuade them to end their protest.

Generally, Indore Jail Administration releases prisoners having good character on the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day. However, no prisoner was released this Independence Day resulting into the fiasco.

The relatives of the prisoners had also met the jail officials to press their demand, but all the efforts went in vain. It was then that about 40 prisoners started hunger strike to protest against administration.

The prisoners observed ‘silence’ when the jail officials tried to hold discussions with the protestors.

Gauging the seriousness of the incident, Prison Superintendent Purushottam Somkuwar interacted with the prisoners and assured them of apprising the Jail Headquarters of their grievances.
