Kolkata: Lashing out at the West Bengal government over the death of 21 infants, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asked it to submit a report within two weeks.

Taking cognizance of media reports and a complaint, the NHRC asked the state's Health Secretary to conduct a detailed investigation into the death of 21 babies in Kolkata’s B C Roy Hospital.

In its notice to the Health Secretary of West Bengal, the Commission warned the hospital administration that the matter will be considered as violation of human rights if the reports proved that the death of the infants was due to negligence.

Taking a note of the incident, the Commission also reminded the state government that treatment of infants should be given utmost importance.
