Kanpur: Injured in a road accident, a policeman died on Tuesday at the emergency gate of Hallett Hospital in Kanpur, after being denied entry into the hospital by the Special Protection Group (SPG) deployed for Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.

As per the sources, the deceased cop Dharmendra Kumar died after security personnel denied him entry into a hospital where Rahul Gandhi was to arrive to meet victims of the Kalka Mail derailment.

It is to be noted that this is a second such death due to the security cover for political heavyweights in the city. Before this, a boy, Aman, had died two years back in a similar condition when the Prime Minister was in town and the SPG had stopped the boy and his family from going to a hospital.

According to reports, Dharmendra Kumar, posted at Attarra police station in Banda, had sustained serious injuries in a road mishap in Bindki area of Fatehpur early on Tuesday. He was brought to Hallett Hospital for treatment but died at the gates of the emergency ward of the hospital after being denied admission on grounds of security following Rahul's visit.

The doctors said Dharmendra could have been saved had he been admitted in the hospital on time.

The Additional City Magistrate SK Sharma said, “No patient has been denied entry into the hospital. The patients were admitted and treated even after the security fence.”
