New Delhi: For most people lighting of firecrackers is the highlight of Diwali. Brighter the sparkles, louder the noise, the greater the thrill! In fact to many of us, these aesthetic forms of light seem so appropriate and most essential for celebrating the 'Festival of Lights'. But sometimes some mishaps may turn this auspicious day into nightmare.

Accidents in Diwali happen as a result of carelessness, negligence and ignorance. All of us enjoy the pleasure of light and sound but when disaster strikes the injured has to bear the cross. In order to avoid any kind of mishap, we have to be very careful while handling firecrackers.

Despite precautions if any accident occurs- like eye injury, skin burn or deafness, there are some instant safety measures which you can follow before the doctor arrives.
Eye injury

Splash tap water on your eyes for 5-10 minutes. And is still the irritation or pain persists and you are unable to open your eyes, immediately see a doctor. There are few eye drops available in the market to sooth eye irritation. You can these but only after consulting a doctor.
Skin burn

Run cold water over the burned area or soak the area in the water. Remember, the water should be cold but not ice-cold. Do not apply tooth paste, any cream, ointment or oil on the burnt area. In case of major burns, the patient should be taken to a burn specialist or hospital. Do not panic.
Sudden deafness

Sometimes sudden deafness might occur due to intense sound of crackers. In this case immediately consult an ENT specialist without wasting time. As prevention is better than cure, try to avoid these types of crackers.

Special precautions for asthma patients

Asthma patients should avoid pollution. While bursting crackers they should wear a face mask. It will be better if they wear the mask even when at home during Diwali. If possible, asthma patients should avoid crackers and the smoke that generates from them.

If any mishap happens, we can give the patient a first-aid treatment before consulting a doctor. This can help avert major problems. For this we need a first-aid box which can be prepared using the following items:

1)    Cotton

2)    Dettol or savlon

3)    Anti-allergic tablets

4)    Sofframicine

5)    Bandaid

6)    Paracetamol
