Dehradun: In a boost to the Congress and a setback to the BJP ahead of Uttrakhand assembly polls, former international shooter Jaspal Rana on Tuesday joined the Congress party after quitting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The golden boy, Jaspal Rana is brother-in-law of former BJP president Rajnath Singh’s son.

Rana had unsuccessfully contested as BJP candidate from Tehri constituency of Uttrakhand in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Rana was said to be upset with the BJP high command after his name did not figure in the list of BJP nominees for the 2012 Uttrakhand Assembly polls.

Rana's admission into the party was approved by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and the announcement of his admission in the Congress was made by AICC General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi.

Party in charge of Uttrakhand Virendra Singh said that Rana would be among the campaigners for the party in the state.

While, even after four days of nomination Congress party haven’t named the candidates for Rudrapur and Kashipur assembly seats. On the other hand it has decided to take strict disciplinary action against the members showing dissent for not being named in the list for 2012 polls.
