Los Angeles: Singer Christina Aguilera landed in jail for her own safety, on account of public intoxication.

Her boyfriend Rutler was driving the car when both of them were pulled out by the deputies, who noticed the vehicle being driven erratically.

The 30-year-old star was later released from custody at the West Hollywood Sheriff's station at about 7.30 am on Tuesday, Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

"We had no desire to prosecute. It was just for public safety. When she was able to navigate, she was released," Whitmore added.

Aguilera was booked for public intoxication while her boyfriend was booked for drunken driving.

By law, a person can be held in custody if they cannot take care of themselves, he says.

"As she got better, she just said, 'I would like to leave,'" says Whitmore, and deputies granted her request.

Aguilera's representatives were not available for comments.
