The ex-Indian skipper, who visited Dainik Jagran office at Noida on Tuesday as Guest Editor, said that the very format of cricket has gone through a number of changes in due course of time.

On being asked whether cricket has become more of a revenue earning source rather than a game, Kapil said that money plays an important role in every walk of life and the organizations - whether big or small, survive on commercial deals and it would not be proper to single out cricket as money minting machinery, he added.

“If one cop takes bribe, it does not mean that all policemen are corrupt, if one IAS officer is dishonest, it does not imply that the entire system is corroded. In the same way, if a few players are involved in wrongdoings, it does not mean that IPL is shady and the tournament should not be aborted only because a handful of people have been found denting the name and spirit of the game,” said Kapil.

The legendary cricketer also said that players should take care of the fact that their character and conduct remain clean.

“We remember players who had good character, even now. So it is not about which player is great, but it’s about their character,” said the former Indian captain.

Kapil tips Team India to seal upcoming Indo-Aussie series

Kapil Dev expressed confidence that Team India under the stewardship of Mahendra Singh Dhoni will emerge victorious in the upcoming India-Australia series.

Kapil said that going by the present form of Indian team; it would be a challenging job for the Australians to get through. At the same time, he said that Team India has got a number of players in its squad, who can single-handedly determine the course of game.

The World Cup winning skipper also said that the Australian team’s bench strength is competent enough to give the opposition team a good run for their money. He also said that Team India will be under pressure, as it would take guard before home crowd.

“Though Team India will be under pressure because they are playing on their home ground but the men in blue are in form and have started playing aggressive cricket. So it very difficult to defeat current Team India,” Kapil said.

The India-Australia series will be crucial to test the strength of relatively inexperienced Australian side. The series will also decide their ODI rankings.

Team India kicks off the series as the Number 1 team in ODIs. It registered back to back series wins in ICC Champions Trophy and tri-nation series in West Indies.

Australia however does not have much to boast off going by their recent performance. The last time, when Australia visited India, it was whitewashed 0-4 by MS Dhoni’s boys. Besides, the sore memory of losing Ashes to England will also be fresh at the back of the Australian team’s head.
