According to reports, Dhoni is upset over his name being dragged into the IPL spot-fixing controversy.

Senior counsel Harish Salve had earlier attacked Dhoni, accusing him of being ‘guilty of corrupt practice’ by lying before the Mudgal Committee on the role of BCCI president N Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan in Chennai Super Kings.

Dhoni had reportedly claimed before the three-member panel that Gurunath Meiyappan had no role to play in CSK. Salve pointed out that this was a 'cover up' that clearly amounted to a corrupt practice.

Dhoni reportedly had a telephonic conversation with Srinivasan on Friday and requested that his resignation from the vice president's post in India Cements and from the CSK captaincy be accepted.

Dhoni has been leading the Chennai franchise since the inception of the IPL. The team lifted two back-to-back titles under his captaincy. CSK is considered to be the most successful IPL team, winning the title twice and featuring in the final on five occasions. It has also won the T20 Champions League.

Dhoni’s decision to step down is likely to affect CSK's brand image considerably.
