Popularly known as the ‘Iron Lady’, Sharmila has been on a fast for over 12 years demanding repeal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 in her home state. She is booked under Section 309 IPC. The law permits the authority to detain her for one year at one go. She is released at the end of each year.

The activist, who is being fed through a nasal tube, had earlier rejected the charge that she had attempted suicide in 2006.

"I do not want to commit suicide. Mine is only a non-violent protest. It is my demand to live as a human being. I love life.

I do not want to take my life but I want justice and peace," she had told the court.
