CBI had moved an application before Special CBI judge Gita Gopi seeking permission to interrogate PP Pandey in judicial custody.

Pandey's lawyers had demanded that he be interrogated in his presence, which was also accepted by the court.

Pandey, who was absconding for a long period, had surrendered before a CBI court in July after the Supreme Court declined anticipatory bail to him.

CBI has named Pandey, suspended IPS officers GL Singhal, DG Vanzara, Tarun Barot and NK Amin, retired DSP JG Parmar and commando Anaju Chaudhary in the chargesheet.

Ishrat, a Mumbai-based student, her friend Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, and their associates Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were gunned down by Crime Branch sleuths on June 15, 2004. According to CBI, the encounter, a joint operation by Gujarat Police and Intelligence Bureau, was fake.
