Ahmedabad: The Ishrat Jahan encounter case has met with controversy again and this time for another reason. The differences in opinion have developed rift between the probing agency, Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).

According to the assessment carried by the CFSL team so far, they have indicated that the encounter that led to death of Ishrat Jahan was fake. However, SIT is declining such reports.

Ishrat along three other college students were killed on June 15, 2004, in an encounter carried out by a team of Ahmedabad Crime Branch led by DIG D G Vanjara. The police alleged that all the four were Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives, involved in a plot to assassinate the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.

Subsequently, SIT team was formed to probe the case.
The SIT and CFSL team have reconstructed the encounter last week after which the question mark put on the genuinity of the encounter by the forensic team emerged as a bone of contention for SIT members.
The Gujarat High Court has asked SIT to submit its final report by November 18.
