The announcement was made by BJP president Rajnath Singh at the party headquarters in New Delhi.

Earlier this month, Pal had resigned from the Congress stating that he had been getting a feeling for the past few days that he is not being able to put forth his views and suggestions and there was a problem in communication with the leadership.

"I met Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and tendered my resignation. I have resigned from my Lok Sabha seat as well as from the party,” Pal had said.

Pal won three Assembly polls and a Lok Sabha election on Congress tickets in Uttar Pradesh where the party is out of power since 1989.

"Congress did not come to power in UP since 1989 but I stayed with the party, kept defending its policies. At the age of 65 when I am leaving Congress party, it is not because I want to get something,” he had said.

Meanwhile, Raju Shrivastav also joined the BJP today in presence of Rajnath Singh.

Earlier on March 11, Srivastava returned the Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha ticket to contest from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, saying he was not getting enough support from the local units of the ruling party in the state.
