The move came after Mukhi, the MLA from Janakpuri constituency, declined to be the pro-tem Speaker.

The pro-tem Speaker administers the oath to all newly-elected legislators and presides over the assembly until a new Speaker is elected.

"A pro-tem speaker's role is limited, and he is appointed by the honourable Lt. Governor, the senior most person in the house, irrespective of the political parties. Accordingly, I was appointed, and I am thankful to him," Mukhi said earlier.

"But our party had decided that no MLA from BJP shall accept this responsibility, as the party thought of contesting the speaker's election," he said.

The elections for the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be held on Friday.
