Talking on his award return, he said, "The scholars' protests against the intolerance is right and I too joined it because the incident left an indelible imprint in my mind. The blood group of scholars are different but they have the same tears."

Joing the bandwagon over the issue of intolerance, Munawwar Rana also returned his award and said, "During India's partition, Pakistan won but Muslims lost. Had the Congress been a bit tolerant, there wouldn't have been the issue of partition at all."

Commenting on Dadri lynching case, Munawwar Rana said, "The Central government must have acted in a way that the Minority of our country wouldn't have felt the fear or reassured them their safety in the country."

Munawwar Rana was born in Raebareli on November 26, 1952 and brought up in Lucknow. Known as a prose composer, Rana was awarded with Ameer Khusro Award and Dr Zakir Hussain Award as well. He received Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu Literature in 2014 for his book 'Shahdaba'.
