New Delhi: In a counter attack on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati over misappropriation of funds released for Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said the decision of CBI probe into MNREGA issue has been taken on the basis of facts and is not ‘politically motivated.’

Dismissing Mayawati’s claim of politicising MNREGA, Ramesh said, “How can be the letter written to Mayawati be politically motivated? Such letters related to MNREGA funds are forwarded to Congress ruled states as well. But none of the states except UP have misused funds to the extreme.”

It needs to be mentioned that Mayawati on Friday wrote a letter to the Prime Minister stating that irregularities cited by Union Minister Jairam Ramesh in implementation of MNREGS in the state are "politically motivated.”

She accused Ramesh of having a pre-conceived agenda and arriving at conclusions without taking cognisance of steps taken by her government.

“The seven districts of the state Balrampur, Gonda, Mahoba, Sonbhadra, Sant Kabeer Nagar, Mirzapur and Kushinagar where  large scale anomalies were traced out were investigated by the retired IAS officer Vinod Shankar Chaubey appointed by the state government,” informed Ramesh.

Hitting back at BSP supremo, the Rural Development Minister said that the step of conducting a CBI probe was not taken on the complaint filed by any Member of Parliament (MP). He said the state government inaction to openly allow flouting of norms and make money from the embezzlement of MNREGA funds forced the centre to take stern action.
