Kolkata: Amid rumors of worsening relations between the UPA’s top allies - the Congress and the Trinamool Congress after the resignation of Congress Minister Manoj Chakraborty from Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet in West Bengal, the Congress high command has sent Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh to meet Mamata in an attempt to improve the ties.

According to sources, the Union Minister was slated to meet Mamata earlier in the day but it was postponed due to the busy schedule of the both leaders. Ramesh arrived here on Monday morning on a two-day visit to the state. There are reports that Ramesh may meet Mamata on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s concern at incidents of campus violence in West Bengal has triggered open war of words between the two parties. Mukherjee had said that the state administration must ensure that the law and order situation was kept under control.

After arriving here, Ramesh also attended a function organized to mark the birthday celebration of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. According to sources, Banerjee was also slated to take part in the event.

However, by the time Mamata arrived for the function the Congress emissary had left.

During his stay in the state capital, Ramesh will also review the implementation of central schemes in the state.

After attending the function, he departed for Dongaria and 24 Parganas to meet with the officials to ascertain the implementation of various rural development schemes. On Tuesday, he is also scheduled to visit Bankura and the naxal affected district of Purulia.
